With the advancements in the field of dentistry, getting a perfect smile is very much possible. But just because cosmetic dentistry has improved in leaps and bounds for the past couple of years, there wasn’t any way to get high-quality veneers or crowns in under an hour. Patients usually had to wait for two weeks before their restorations could fully be fabricated and ready to be cemented on place. At least that was the case before CEREC technology hit your local dentist’s office.

What is CEREC® all about?

CEREC is a brand new technology which enables your dentist to craft restorations such as veneers and crowns in under an hour and inside the bounds of his or her dental clinic. This is done with the help of digital imaging and 3D modelling of the affected tooth so that your dentist can design and create restorations in a short period of time.

How is the procedure of making CEREC® restorations done?

The first part of the procedure involves preparing the tooth or teeth to be cosmetically altered. Your dentist does so by trimming off a portion of the outer layer of the tooth, or the enamel. This step is necessary because if the tooth is not shaved appropriately, the resulting crown will make the tooth larger or cause the veneer to stick out.

Once the first part is done, your dentist can take a digital image of the tooth which will then be turned into a 3D model on the computer. It is in that same computer wherein your dentist could design the final restoration using the model as a guide. Once your dentist is happy with the model of the restoration, this data is transmitted to a milling device which carves the restoration from porcelain blocks. Within mere minutes, your restoration will be ready for adhesion.

What are the benefits of using CEREC® technology?

If you’re looking for an instant way to improve the appearance of your smile, then CEREC does exactly that. The shortest time that you can create crowns using this technology is 6 minutes. And because the procedure can be finished in at least an hour, this gets rid of the need to visit your dentist for a second time, just like what you would have to do with porcelain veneers. Lastly, you don’t need as many anaesthetic injections because of the shortened treatment period making CEREC also appropriate for those with dental anxiety.
